There is a fear that sits underneath most professional transitions and it sounds like this: “What if I lose myself in the process?”
It comes from an assumption that reinvention means erasing who you have been. That moving forward requires, in fact, leaving yourself behind.
Well…it does not.
The most sustainable transitions I have witnessed are not replacements.
They are reorganisations of what makes you…you.
Parts of you travel forward intact โ your values, your deep skills, the ways of working that have always come naturally. These do not disappear. They become the foundation.
Other parts evolve โ how you apply your experience, what context you work in, the identity you lead with, the people you surround yourself with.
And new dimensions emerge โ capabilities you are only beginning to develop, aspects of yourself that could not have existed in your previous context.
Transition is not subtraction. It is instead addition and reconfiguration.
This matters practically because it changes the question you ask yourself.
Not: “Who do I become instead of who I am?”
But: “What do I carry forward, what do I let evolve, and what do I want to build from here?”
There is also one more thing worth saying, and that is that the transition is rarely clean or linear. Thinking, reflecting, and experimenting do not happen in sequence.
There is instead a loop: You act, and then you reflect. You reflect, and then you act again.
You are not starting over. You are instead building on everything you already are.
โ What part of yourself are you most committed to carrying forward?
