Career Transition –

Here is something no one tells you about professional transition: the people closest to you may be the biggest obstacle โ€” not because they mean you harm, but because of how identity works. And it is because identity is not just internal; it is also socially reinforced by your environment.

Every time you walk into your current workplace, every conversation with colleagues who have known you for years, every dinner with family who remember who you used to be โ€” these interactions send a signal:

Not maliciously. Not even consciously. But powerfully, nevertheless.

When I returned full time at University to study with 19-year-old students, my children still in their teens didn’t find my decision “cool”. Instead there were confused with the image they had of me as their father; they could not imagine themselves being in a classroom with someone of my age. It was out of love towards me, but their message was clear…remain the dad that we have known, the professional one, not the student one.

The people in your current environment have a stake in keeping you consistent. Because when you change, it implicitly challenges them too, and it will change the relational dynamic you have.

So they ask questions that pull you back from changing, they raise doubts that keep you small, or they offer comfort that, paradoxically, keeps you stuck.

This is not a reason to abandon your relationships, but it is certainly a reason to expand your environment deliberately.

Seek out people who are already exploring what interests you.
Find communities where your “possible self” is normal โ€” not exceptional.
Look for mentors, coaches, and peers who see the version of you that does not yet fully exist.

These relationships do something your current environment cannot: they make the new identity feel real, achievable, and worth pursuing as

Do not make the mistake of believing that your transition is a solo project… it is a social one.
