Career Transition –

“I just need to figure out who I really am.”

I hear this a lot from my clients navigating transition.

And I understand why. I had the same thought when I initiated my last professional transition. It felt like the right question. Like there is some authentic version of myself waiting to be uncovered โ€” if only I introspected hard enough.

But here is the problem: the “true self” framing creates paralysis, and it assumes

What research on identity actually shows is more interesting โ€” and more useful:

– We do not have one self. We have possible selves.

– Who you are today is real. But also are the people you could become.

Three questions worth sitting with:

  1. Who do you hope to become?
  2. Who do you fear becoming?
  3. Who are you becoming, whether you intended it or not?

ย

Possible selves are provisional, playful, and open to revision. They are working hypotheses, not final answers.

This shift matters practically:

Instead of asking “Is this really me?” โ€” ask “Could this become me?”

Instead of waiting to feel certain โ€” start exploring what resonates.

Transition is not about uncovering a fixed truth; it is much more about authoring a new chapter.
